Single Cable Mini Tutorial |
|
| When using the Simple Cable template you MUST mark the border with registration and grid lines before quilting. The type of border treatment you are using will determine where the registration and grid lines are placed. | |

Begin by dividing the border in half lengthwise and drawing the (horizontal) Border Center Line. Find the middle of the border and draw a vertical line. Place the Longarm University Stencil Grid© on the intersection of these two lines and begin drawing the grid lines from the middle line out to both raw edges of the quilt. For best results I recommend the Stencil Grids designed for these templates. On light fabrics I like to use the Mark Be Gone water soluble fabric marking pen. On dark fabric I like to use Miracle Chalk in a Chalk O Liner dispenser. |

After the registration and vertical grid lines have been drawn, starting at the middle line of the top border, begin numbering the vertical grid lines 1 through 8 all the way to the RIGHT raw edge of the border. Number 1 is ALWAYS on the Middle line of the border. Go back to the middle line and begin numbering the vertical grid lines from 8 through 1 all the way to the LEFT raw edge of the border. See the photo at the left .

Stitching Line #1—Starting at the left edge of the border, place the #1 line of the template onto any of the #1 drawn vertical grid lines. Match the etched grid lines and the Single Cable Center Line of the template to the drawn grid lines and drawn center line of the border. See the photo at the left. Notice how #1 on the template is at the top of the curve and #5 is the “bottom” of the curve. Starting at the raw left edge of the quilt, stitch this line across the border to the right raw edge of the quilt. Move the template as needed, taking care to match the numbers and registration lines as you go. At the middle line of the border, #1 on the template and #1 on the fabric should match. Notice how the stitching line is about ¼ inch from the edge of the template. Remember that the Longarm University® templates are always “cut back” on the edges to compensate for the width of the hopping foot . The photo at the left shows a completed Stitching Line #1 |

Stitching Line #2—Starting at the left edge of the border, place the #1 on the template onto any of the #5 drawn grid lines. Match the etched grid lines and the Single Cable Center Line of the template to the drawn grid lines and drawn Border Center Line of the border. See the photo at the left. Starting at the raw left edge of the quilt stitch this line across the border to the right raw edge of the quilt. At the middle line of the border, #5 on the template and #1 on the fabric should match. Stitching Line #2 is complete. The photo at the left shows two completed lines of stitching. These two lines of stitching make a very traditional, Single Cable Border, but we are going to add two more lines of stitching to make the border look even better. |

Stitching Line #3—Starting at the left edge of the border, place the #1 on the template onto any of the #3 drawn grid lines. Match the etched grid lines and the Single Cable Center Line of the template to the drawn grid lines and drawn Center Line of the border. See the photo at the left. Starting at the raw left edge of the quilt stitch this line across the border to the right raw edge of the quilt. Stitching Line #3 is complete and shown in the photo at the lower left. These three lines of stitching would make a very interesting border! |

Starting at the raw left edge of the quilt, stitch this line across the border to the right raw edge of the quilt. Stitching Line #4 is complete and shown in the photo below left.

| To some quilters the Single Cable (with either two or four lines of stitching) is enough quilting in the border. But, if you are like me, you can use this Single Cable as a start for variations of this design. The photos below show several variations that I came up with. | |
|
The feather variation shown in Photo #1 on the left has the “spine” of the feathers at the straight edge of the border. The feather variation in Photo #2 in the upper middle has a feather in the middle of the Single Cable. By the way, this feather is quilted with one line of stitching the whole length of the border. The variation in Photo #3 in lower middle has “ribbons” stitched in the middle of the four line Single Cable. Again, the ribbons are stitched with one line of stitching the length of the border. You could easily quilt ribbons in the two line Single Cable, as well. The feather variation in Photo # 4 on the right has the stitching line as the spine of the feather. Use your imagination and don’t be afraid to experiment! Remember, this is your quilt and you are free to quilt what you desire on it! |
