Cutting Instructions
WOF = Width of fabric

Fabric #1
Light background
 

2/3 yard

Cut into 5—3½ inch x WOF strips.

From these strips cut:
     20—3½ x 3½ inch squares
     20—3½ x 6½ inch
            rectangles**

Fabric #2
Medium  or Medium Dark
 
2/3 yard

Cut into 1—6½ x WOF strip
From this strip cut
     5—6½ x 6½ inch squares
 
Cut into 4—3½ x WOF strips From these strips
     cut 40—3½ x 3½ inch
            squares**

Fabric #3
Light or Medium Light
can be the same as Fabric #1
 
3/4 yard

Cut into 2—12½ x WOF strips
From this strip cut
     4—12½ x 12½ inch squares

Fabric #4
Dark - Inner Border
 
1/2 yard

Cut into 4—3½ x WOF strips

Fabric #5
Medium or medium dark
Can be the same as Fabric #2
 
1 yard

Cut into 5—6½ x WOF strips

Fabric #6
Dark - Binding
Can be the same as Fabric #4
 
1/2 yard

Cut into 5—2¾ X WOF strips

Batting of choice   -  2 yards x 90 inches
 
Backing Fabric -  3 1/2 yards x 40 inches

If you are NOT using the Marti Michelle Flying Geese Ruler, follow the instructions below.

Flying Geese Units
Make 20


On the WRONG side of the Fabric #2, 3½ inch squares, with an extra fine line permanent fabric marker, draw a diagonal line as shown  in the illustration at the left. Do this on all the squares.

 


Place the Fabric #2 - 3½ square, Right Sides Together (RST) on top of the Fabric #1 - 3½ x 6½ rectangle as shown in the illustration at the left.

Stitch along the drawn line as indicated by the dashed line in the illustration at the left. Do this for all 20 of the Fabric #1 - 3½ x 6½ rectangles.
 



 

After stitching, trim about 1/4 inch away from the stitching line as shown in the illustration at the left.

 



 

Press the Fabric #2 as shown in the illustration at the left.



Place a Fabric 2 - 3½ square, RST on top of the Fabric #1 - 3½ x 6½ rectangle as shown in the illustration at the left.

Stitch along the drawn line as indicated by the dashed line in the illustration at the left. Do this for the remaining 20 of the Fabric #1 - 3½ x 6½ rectangles.
 



 

After stitching, trim about 1/4 inch away from the stitching line as shown in the illustration at the left.



 

Press the Fabric #2 as shown in the illustration at the left.

Divide the Flying Geese Units into two piles of ten units each.

NOTE: All Seams are 1/4 inch.


 


Take one pile of the Flying Geese Units’ and with RST stitch a Fabric #1, 3½ x 3½ square to each edge of the Flying Geese Units as shown in the illustration above.  Press towards the Fabric #1 squares.
 



 

Stitch a Flying Geese Units to each side of the 6½ x 6½ inch Fabric #2 square. Press towards the Fabric #2 square.



 

Stitch the remaining Flying Geese Units to the top and the bottom of the block as shown at the left.

Press as desired. 

You should have 5 completed
Star Blocks.

Using the 12½ x 12½ inch, Fabric #3 squares and the Star Blocks, stitch together as shown above. Press seams as desired.
 

Use Fabric #4 and add it to the quilt top as an Inner Border.  Use Fabric #5 and add it to the quilt top as an Outer Border. Quilt top is complete and ready for quilting.

I know that you are thinking that this is an pretty un-spectacular quilt. And you are correct, especially at this point.  As a friend once told me "It's going to take a heap of quilting to make it look good!" Trust me, once this quilt top gets quilted it’s going to look VERY different.

Next, piece your backing fabric if necessary and then put your quilt top on your quilting machine in your usual manner.  If at all possible, float your quilt top so that the top raw edge of the quilt is about 1 inch or so away from the leader.  If you don’t know how to do this, Click Here to go to the  Tutorial Page for the article “Putting a Quilt on the Quilting Machine”.
