Frequently Asked Questions

What is Longarm University?
Longarm University is where teachers and students come together to learn the art of longarm quilting.

Where is Longarm University located?

Longarm University (LAU) is located about 8 miles from Sea-Tac airport in Renton, WA. It is in a semi-rural area about half way between Seattle and Tacoma, WA. LAU is close to lodging, restaurants and RV accommodations.

Workshops and classes are held in a professional longarm quilter's studio. By having classes in a quilting studio, you get to see how another quilter has her studio set up and how she works on a daily basis.

How large are the classes?
Each workshop has a maximum of  7 students Classes are a combination of  hands-on, demonstration and lectures and each instructor gives many class handouts with their classes.

What types of quilting machines are used at Longarm University?
At Longarm University we use a Gammill Classic longarm quilting machine. The Gammill company has graciously donated the machine for our student’s use. Longarm University does not endorse any specific brand of quilting machines.  ALL the quilting machines that are on the market are good, well made machines.  Longarm University instructors are familiar will ALL machine types.  If you have a machine (or are thinking of purchasing a machine) which is different from the one used in class, that's all right. The instructors will tell you when procedures would be different on your machine.

What is the cost for the workshops and what is included?
The tuition for each workshop varies. Included in the tuition is -- all teachers fees, workshop materials, lunch on class days, snacks, and soft drinks. There are also many extras: class binders, class handouts, certificates, etc. that are included in the tuition.
